Like most of you, I didn’t always love fitness. Playing sports growing up, working out was something that I associated with punishment, or a chore that I had to do to simply stay in the good graces of my coaches and not get cut. I didn’t begin to “love” fitness until about 4 years into my journey. That was when I began to look around and notice how far I had actually come. From that “light bulb” moment on, I haven’t looked back. Working out became apart of my daily routine, and after my freshman year of college I was unrecognizable to a lot of my high school friends because of the progress I had made. Pretty soon my friends began coming to me asking what I had done to achieve my results, and I started coaching them.
“To me, there was no better feeling than watching someone progress and seeing results that they never thought they could achieve.”
Years later, I began looking into opening up my own gym to impact even more people. I looked at all sorts of franchises, including many of the well-known kickboxing gyms that you see, and many cardio-heavy gyms. While there was a lot potential revenue to be made in those, I struggled with the thought of teaching something to people that they couldn’t apply to their everyday lives, or that I didn’t believe in just to make a dime. I thought to myself, “in what every day situation am I ever gonna put a boxing speed bag to use” or, “what good is running on a treadmill going to do for my sister when what she really needs is the strength to carry around her boys all day”. Then I found the term for what I had been applying to my own workouts and what I believed in. The term was Functional Fitness!
It’s workouts are built around the compound movements (movements that use multiple muscle groups at one time), because whether you realize it or not you’re doing compound movements on a daily basis. When you stand up from sitting, multiple muscles groups are firing at once to get you out of your chair. So after much debate, I started my own brand, Ascend Functional Fitness. By doing these compound exercises, you’re able to get a full-body workout in minimal time! I also felt that most gyms left warming up and the recovery process to people on their own time outside of the gym, and I knew that wouldn’t work for me, so I implemented it into my own programs.
Those who have come to our gym have seen incredible results even after such a short time, and it’s the best feeling in the world for me to see them achieving things they didn’t imagine possible. And I look forward to positively impacting more people along the way!
